Engine Rebuilding 911 A typical "Top-end" 911 engine teardown & rebuild takes 30 hrs on the bench. A bottom end rebuild takes about 10 hrs additional.
A common repair needed with any 911 engine rebuild is the replacement of the cylinder head studs. The original studs are glued-in and must be heated with a torch to remove. The new studs are installed with Loc-tite & set to an exact height. Replacing all (24) studs takes an additional 6.0 hrs. Removal & installation of engine takes 8-10 hrs depending on model. Performance increases are best made while the engine is removed for other work. Larger pistons & cylinders may be installed, improved cams and/or a larger intake may be fitted as well.
